River Management

CEGIS is the unique institution, which has developed extensive knowledge base on the river morphology in Bangladesh and provides solutions to issues related the river management. The rivers are alluvial, frequently shifting their courses and are required to carry flows and sediments and, unlike other rivers of the world, to build lands. Stabilizing the river courses as well as for any intervention in the flood plains requires deep understanding of the geo- and river morphological dimensions. For this purpose, the morphological analysis of time-series data and data collected from physical survey are routinely analyzed and the changes in the river courses are monitored and forecasted. Over the years, CEGIS has generated considerable knowledge and experiences to understand the river morphology as well as its role in delta building process. Space Technology-based Analysis

CEGIS has developed its unique excellence in utilization and application of space technology and is specialized in the satellite image processing, analysis, and interpretation and application. It provides state of art mapping and low cost geospatial solutions using space technology in conjunction with Geographic Information Systems in environment, water, agriculture, energy, and telecommunication sector. These solutions help project managers and decision makers for better planning, developing and implementing projects requiring geospatial information. With an innovative approach to environmental challenges, remote sensing professionals are highly skilled at obtaining and processing satellite data efficiently and producing meaningful solutions for managers and policy makers using updated and historical satellite images. Anthropology, Socio-economic and Livelihood Studies

CEGIS has conducted a number of studies involving socio-economic analysis. Almost all the EIA studies are followed by a report on Social Impact Assessment (SIA) carried out by the Social and Economic Division of the Center. All these activities are carried out in close conformity with the national and international perspectives. Some of the notable projects where SIA was conducted through comprehensive field surveys included environmental and social studies as well as stakeholder consultations under the “Haor Rehabilitation Scheme”, EIA/SIA of the “Updating/Upgrading the Feasibility Study of Dhaka Integrated Flood Control Embankment cum Eastern Bypass Road Multipurpose Project”, and EIA/SIA of the “Hatiya-Nijhum Dwip Cross Dam Project”.

Policy Studies and Plan Formulation

CEGIS has been involved in analyzing a number of policies of the country that included the Coastal Zone Policy and the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategies. It was involved in the upgrading of WARPO rules under the “Strengthening the WARPRO: organizational and institutional development Project”. Professional and intellectual opinions are communicated to various government organizations regarding formulation and amendment of various Acts, government regulations and policies, strategies, etc.

Health and Sanitation

CEGIS has carried out studies on the health and sanitary conditions of the country. It has provided its services to the Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) for preparing an inventory on arsenic contamination in groundwater. CEGIS has conducted two other projects for the DPHE titled “Preparation of GIS based Arsenic Database through GPS field survey and Development Arsenic DSS software” and “Para Water Source Mapping for Chittagong Hill Tracts Area’ under ’Environmental Sanitation, Hygiene and Water Supply in Rural Areas Project (GOB - UNICEF)”. “Perception of hygiene studies in Chittagong Hill tracts and Plain lands” a UNICEF funded study, has also been carried out by the Professionals of CEGIS.

Information Technology and Database Management

Developing GIS and Web based application software and database management. It is updated with the latest developments in database and ICT including .Net, map server, Oracle 10g, and open source technology. The Division strives to promote standardization of metadata, data quality, data format and others in Bangladesh.
